Fast RMAN restores on Exadata X2-2

Exadata performance never ceases to amaze.

I’ve just performed an RMAN DUPLICATE DATABASE on an X2-2 with high capacity disks. The database was 500GB in size and the source database was backed up as a compressed backupset. The backup pieces were then transferred to the target X2 full rack and stored in a DBFS file system.

I then started the duplicate operation (which incidentally is a huge time saver in itself when network connectivity isn’t available between source and target) –

DUPLICATE DATABASE MYSRCDB TO MYTARDB BACKUP LOCATION ‘/dbfs_direct/fs1’;

Total time for the restore and recovery was less than 10 minutes! For a 500GB database – and bearing in mind this isn’t even on the “High Performance” disk configuration.
